Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Lecturer in Animal Behaviour to join our team. You'll be responsible for delivering high-quality teaching, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, labs, and fieldtrips; training sessional assistants, and co-convening courses from undergraduate to masters level. Beyond teaching, you'll undertake original research in animal behaviour, preferably on birds, amphibians, reptiles or bats. You will also contribute to the teaching, postgraduate supervision and administrative requirements of the School within the Ecology, Biodiversity and Animal Behaviour Team.

If you're a passionate academic with a strong background in animal behaviour, a dedication to student success, and a desire to contribute to the broader academic community, this is your chance to inspire the next generation of scholars and make a lasting impact in the field!

Salary will be in the range of $87,500 to $104,322 per year based on skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position. This is a fixed-term position for three years, starting June or July 2025, with possible extension to four years, if funding permits. The position is supported by a New Zealand Mana Tūānuku Research Leader Fellowship awarded to an existing academic staff member, thereby creating an opportunity for an early career scientist to establish their own research and teaching profile. The position is full-time (37.5 hours a week), based on our Hillcrest Campus.

For more information on the role please see the position description. For questions or a confidential conversation about the role, please contact Professor Ian MacDonald, Acting Dean, ian.mcdonald@waikato.ac.nz. All applications must be submitted through the online portal, emailed applications will not be accepted.

We're looking for a motivated and forward-thinking academic with a PhD in a relevant field and a strong foundation in animal behaviour. You'll bring up-to-date knowledge and a passion for teaching, whether in large lectures or small group seminars, along with a commitment to innovative and inclusive teaching methods. Your proven ability to deliver accurate assessments, strong organisational skills, and a developing track record of high-quality research, publication, and ability to attract research funding will ensure you thrive in this role. You'll also have the flexibility to embrace new techniques and technologies, a willingness to engage with Mātauranga Māori in research, and the drive to foster strong relationships with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. If you're eager to contribute to both research and the wider academic community, and ready to inspire future scholars, this is the perfect opportunity for you.
