Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga - Lecturer or Pūkenga Matua - Senior Lecturer in Marine Biology. This is a permanent, full-time position.
The appointee will be involved in developing, administering, and teaching into our undergraduate and postgraduate marine biology and ecology courses, including field-based courses. There will be an expectation to contribute to grow our marine biology programme, as well as recruit and supervise postgraduate students. A desire to establish or maintain an Aotearoa New Zealand-based research programme will be important, along with an ability to attract external research funding.
Key responsibilities:
- Deliver excellent teaching and contribute to course coordination across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
- Establish and develop your own research programme, including attracting external funding, providing postgraduate student supervision, and disseminating research findings.
- Contribute to the strategic goals of the School of Biological Sciences, such as improving the student experience and recruiting and retaining underrepresented student groups.
- Contribute to service and leadership within the Victoria University Coastal Ecology Lab (VUCEL), School, Faculty, University and/or wider profession.

You will be motivated by a passion for Marine Biology and/or a related discipline and be committed to high-quality research and teaching.
Key requirements:
- A PhD in Biology, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology or a related discipline.
- Excellent teaching skills, with experience such as lecturing, leading tutorials, or the delivery of field or laboratory classes.
- A strong record of published academic research.
- Outstanding people and communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work closely and collegially with other academic, technical, and administrative staff members to achieve the teaching goals of the School.
